Roots of Hoosier Catholic Education

In 1851, Mother Theresa Hackelmeier (1827-1860) came to Oldenburg from ViennaAustria. She braved the long difficult journey by herself to educate the communities over flowing orghanages. A cholera outbreak in 1847 had left many orphans in this German community. The Sisters of Saint Francis Oldenburg went on to start schools for African American children in Indianapolis and other schools throughout the state.

Oldenburg Indiana is one of is one of Indiana’s most picturesque town. Oldenburg is known as the village of spires because it has numerous Catholic churches and religious schools. The town was founded in 1837 by group and it still and it still by group of German settlers okay and it still holds its old world charm. The town has bilingual signs in German and English to show how much German Catholics influence the area. A walking tour of Oldenburg will reveal wonderful clapboard houses ,tin facades and well preserved brick structures from its early history.

A significant aspect of the towns’ architectural appeal is the fact that 80 of the roughly 115 homes in the historic district were constructed of stone or wood. Brick structures were built from the Gehrig Brickyard at the South edge of town. Cast and wrought iron was the worker for Tinsmith Casper Gape richness. Merchants in the community follow the German community by living above or on the same property as their shops.

Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg hold a bread and breakfast in bed and breakfast event every December. This is held at the OldenburgFranciscanCenter. This event includes overnight accommodations and breakfast. The activities included are Luminaries walk and a tour of the Abbey. The evening can be spent enjoying hot chocolate popcorn and family movies. You can find out more about this event by calling FranciscanCenter at 812-933-6437. There are tours of the convent available through out the year.
There are numerous activities in the historic towns that surround Oldenburg. You can visit the historic state Park site at Metamora and stay overnight in old Oldenburg
The millstones are powered by a 12 foot waterwheel in the canal behind mill. In 1946 the state of Indiana purchased 14 mile section along the WhitewaterCanal that included the mill. It is now a state historic site.

Another great place to visit on a weekend trip to OldenburgIndiana is Salt Creek Ranch. The Ranch offers 700 acres of wooded trails and goes into the Metamora historic site. . In Oldenburg itself you will want to check out the quaint shops. The Schwestren Gallery of Arts is one of these shops. Schwester is German for sisters, the gallery is named this because two sisters and their three daughters who run the shop. The Shoestring Gallery offers wonderful quelling and felted wool Christmas ornaments. The eclectic offering in this shop include potty, painting and metal sculpture. Another great shop in Oldenburg is Carrige House (KUTSCHENHAUS) on Main St .Oldenburg. They offer a variety of furniture and collectibles from the 1800’s up to the 1960’s. The Carriage House is housed in an 1890 historic carriage house. They specialize in German smalls (or collectibles) and Bristol vases.

The Brau Haus Restaurant is a must place to eat when in the historic town of Oldenburg. There menu offers devious traditional German American dinners and deserts. They are noted for their chicken, German potato salad, and bratwurst. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. The The Brau Haus Restauranth operates Saturday 11 A.M. to 9 P.M. Sunday 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. There are just too many wonderful places near Oldenburg to stay when you are visiting the village of spires. I am going to tell you about two bed and breakfast of not. There is the Hermitage Bed and Breakfast in nearby Brookville.
You can enjoy the beauty of the White RiverValley while sipping lemonade from a 112 foot long veranda. If you want to venture onto the lawn you can use a hammock to forget about the stress in your life.
The house was built by two great Hoosier artists in 1835.They built it to give a home to many of their fellow artist known as the Hoosier Group. The Hermitage features 19 rooms including a library with antique books, magazines and a wood burning fireplace
